Darwin Radio (VID) commenced service
on 25th September 1913 from a site near the present Casino known as "Frogs
Hollow". During WWII
the station was hit by Japanese shells during the bombing of Darwin. It
survived and remained in service at that site until 1952 when operations
were transferred to the present site at Parap.
On Christmas day 1974 Darwin was hit by intense cyclone Tracy
which resulted in complete devastation of the city. Luckily the station
was not extensively damaged but was off air for almost a week as all
antennas were down.
VID operated the Outpost Radio Service as "VJY" for many years providing
communications for cattle stations and remote localities in the Northern
Territory and Queensland. The service was taken over by the Post Office
in the early nineteen seventies then the St.
Johns Ambulance until it's closure in June 1999 with the upgrading
of all outposts to satellite communications.
Darwin Radio was once one of the busiest stations with a staff of
ten. The station ceased manned operations in May 1999.
The station closed down on the 30th June 2002 along with all the other
Australian coast radio stations.
