Stories of the Australian Coastal Radio Service

Carrier Pidgeon Mode

There was a notorious OTC Technical Officer (Oh if ever I could write a book about him) who was on the installation team. On the official opening of Cape Schank CRS (VIM), there were a number of digitories there including I believe a representative from the local newspaper.

Our fearless tech was there conducting tours with zest. In the tour he was constantly referring to how modern this communications station was, and to wit how brilliant their back-up communications was with respect to an individual failure.

During the conversation the local news media (a lady) who I believe was from the Mornington Peninsula News enquired if all these "back ups" failed what would Cape Schank do to overcome the problem? You may not believe this but tis true..... There perchance on the window sill was a pidgeon. In his own peculiar manner the tech observed it sitting there.

Thence came the reply ......"You see that pidgeon sitting there? Well in the event that should all our communications fail then that pidgeon is specially trained. It is a homing pidgeon and should we lose all communications by radio then we are able to tie the messages to the pidgeons leg and send it directly to our Melbourne Office!"

Needless to say next morning or thereabouts in the local Mornington Peninsula newspaper up shot the headlines........"Modern Communications Station backed up by carrier pidgeon!"
